Nebulon listed in TechTarget's SearchStorage top startups to watch in 2021. Nebulon attacks the processing bottleneck with an offload device that sends most processing functions to the cloud.
Nebulon is included on CRN's list of 10 data storage startups that made recent headlines as they came out of stealth or unveiled their first cloud storage, disaster recovery, and other innovations.
Nebulon's use of dual Arm processors could make the move to a unified memory design, giving Nebulon additional power to run its storage processing workload, and so exceed x86-powered storage controllers in performance, cost, and efficiency terms even more than it does now.
Nebulon, a storage startup that came out of stealth in June, aims to compete with SAN arrays and HCI. It has built a product that fits into neither category. Nebulon's advantage over HCI from offloading storage-related processing from the host server CPUs. Their advantage of SAN is cost saving.
Nebulon's flexibility has a real attraction. Service providers, dev and test environments, shared DR facilities or those wanting a more flexible approach without some of the costs often associated with that. Supplying their cards through established server vendors is smart and positions them as an interesting vendor with a fresh approach to storage that is worth watching.
Nebulon, the leader in Cloud-Defined Storage, makes The Tech Tribune's list of 2021 Best Tech Startups in Fremont.
The simplicity and beauty of the Nebulon offering to me appears to be mostly within the buying model. The team have partnered with a number of server vendors and you can add the Nebulon SPU and services subscription to your order the same as you would any other SKU. It is really as simple as buying a RAID controller.
Will the rise of the DPU mean the fall of the traditional storage array? The Data Processing Unit (DPU) has seen a surge due to successful systems such as AWS Nitro. However, what happens when you bypass the concept of HCI using the DPU? That’s the promise from startup Nebulon.
By leveraging automation and AI, IT organisations can help ease the burden of their remote workforce with automated software updates, storage operations-as-a-service and simpler programmability for at-scale automation.
Nebulon defines its offering as “cloud-defined storage (CDS)”. It’s basically an add-in card that delivers “on-premises, server-based enterprise-class storage that consumes no server CPU / memory resources and is defined and managed through the cloud”. This is achieved via a combination of nebulon ON (the cloud management plane) and the Nebulon Services Processing Unit (SPU).
Storage array enhancements used to be simple; a faster drive led to faster arrays. But memory-like protocols and drives have muddied the water, and hardware-enhanced drive and array controllers are also clamouring for attention.
A solution like Nebulon can bring very similar results, and more, at a fraction of the cost. The infrastructure can be simplified and standardized on ordinary x86 boxes, with cost-effective commodity Ethernet connectivity. All the magic is delivered via the cloud, giving the user a consistent experience with full control over large, globally distributed server estates.
Nebulon has developed a Kubernetes CSI driver for its cloud-defined, DPU-enhanced server SAN storage. Nebulon ON uses cloud-analytics to allow Kubernetes admins to self-service provision and manage their entire Kubernetes stack all while using the workflows they are familiar with in the public cloud.
CBR interviews Siamak Nazari, co-founder and CEO of Nebulon. Nebulon's Cloud-Defined Storage is a flexible, on-prem and application server-based enterprise-class storage that consumes no server resources (CPU, network or memory) and is defined and managed through the cloud.
Nebulon uncloaked from stealth in June 2020 to add a new solution, branded cloud-defined storage, to this market. The Nebulon architecture is an intriguing solution and one that many enterprises may see as a great way to build a large-scale compute farm without the dependencies of either SAN or locked-in storage.
Startup to offer on-site storage with local I/O and some controller functionality in the cloud, combining software-defined and cloud to bring “fleet management at scale.

Nebulon Inc., a startup led by a group of storage industry veterans, today emerged from stealth mode with a product it bills as the “first ground-breaking innovation for server-based primary storage” since hyperconverged infrastructure.
"We've made it so application owners can consume enterprise class assets without having a PhD in storage," Craig Nunes, Nebulon COO.
Nebulon uses a cloud-defined storage method to provide better performance at better prices than the popular cloud-based storage approach for managing data.
The startup is attempting to thread the needle between expensive storage arrays and server-based solid-state drives that fall short handling critical applications and hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) requiring additional server software.
Nebulon has emerged from stealth to launch a hybrid cloud computing platform that enables workloads to be processed in the cloud while data continues to be stored on a local application server.
